BASE LITERARY FESTIVAL

Appreciation and patronisation of literature and arts were very much there in every age and society. In feudal societies the monarchs and the nobles used to reward creative endeavours and there were different titles that creative people were endowed with. In modern democratic societies governments have come up with various bodies, funds and awards to encourage people in their creative pursuits.
In recent times, we have seen a trend to celebrate literary accomplishments through literary festivals. Literary festivals have become one of the most popular platforms to acknowledge and appreciate literary and creative personalities. While many of these festivals started with the idea of celebrating diverse literary cultures, gradually most of them have turned canonical and commercial. Leaving a few instances, there is hardly any space for new and especially marginal literatures as such.
In view of this, the Bengali Academia for Social Empowerment (BASE), an organization working for the marginalized peoples in Bengal has come up with a plan to acknowledge and celebrate the marginal and minor literatures with a special focus on Bengali Muslim literature and culture. This will be known as BASE Literary Festival and will be organised in the last week of January every year. Considering the pandemic situation, the inaugural event this year might be in online mode but in later years it will be a normal in-person event and would travel to different locations in Bengal.
BASE Literary Festival will invite, appreciate, acknowledge and award diverse smaller and marginal literary platforms and practitioners from Bengal and elsewhere. Creative people like authors, poets, writers, translators, photographers, film makers, journalists, artists, craftsmen and public intellectuals can take part in this festival.
All are welcome to actively take part and support the forthcoming inaugural edition of the BASE Literary Festival.
